Japan 2011-Otaru

Today is another day of sun and clear skies above the brisk air. Great conditions to make a day trip Otaru, a former port city 30 minutes outside of Sapporo. As you exit the JR station, you gaze at the sea in the background
If you walk straight from the station towards the sea, you come across .the famous canal that you read about in all the guidebooks. In preperation for a winter festival that starts the next day, many places are bing decorated with different snow sculptures

To te west of the canal, we alked along an area of shops and restaurants. One of the big draws for this area is the artisanal glass blowers. They make a variety of items from pens to ornaments to drinkware. Some places let you blow your own glass souvenir

Another popular item is the seafood. Due to its proximity to the water, a number of places offer fresh cathes from the sea. They will also cookm or grill up your item for immediate consumption. There was plenty of crab and shellfish. Crabs ranged from small to very large to fit most budgets

Lter when the sunsets, the gas fed lamps illuminate the city and aded a soft glow to the surroundings. We didnt stay long enough, but they also release glass orbs with lit candles in them into the canal. Its said to be a very romantic sight.
