Akihabara to open up to pedestrians again

In some areas of Tokyo, streets are closed off to automobile traffic on Sundays and opened up to the average street walker. Shinjuku, Ginza, and Akihabara were some of the areas that participated in this tradition. Akihabara had ceased this closure about 2.5 years ago but are set to start it back up again. Beginning January 23 and running for a 6 month trial, Akiba visitors will once again flood Chuo dori between the hours of 1300-1700 on Sunday

The practice came to a halt when a man drove his truck into the unsuspecting crowd gathered on a June Sunday. He later jumped out and began to stab passerbys. Many were injured and several people were killed during the rampage.
